Ol Pejeta: a safari in rhino country

Ol Pejeta is a worthwhile stop on a circuit north of Nairobi, combining wildlife viewing with an introduction to conservation. It can fit into a trip around Mount Kenya and Samburu if you leave enough time at each stop.

Safari entry and conservation experiences

General entry and specialist activities do not cover the same experiences. Conservation visits, guided outings and other programmes may need separate bookings. Ask what is included, how long the activity lasts and where to meet. General admission does not mean access to every programme.

Planning a self-drive day

Begin with a game drive in the area recommended at entry, then leave a reserved time for any booked visit. Two nights nearby reduce the risk of missing an activity after a delayed arrival. Rhinos are wild animals: sightings do not come with a guaranteed distance or number.

Camping or staying in a lodge

Choose accommodation by its actual location, access and services. Conservancy campsites have their own booking and safety rules; you cannot simply open a tent wherever you like. Confirm return times and any guide requirements for your activities.

Before setting off

Check current vehicle access and booking conditions. Refuel in a town along your route, save confirmations offline and pack warm clothes for the evening. Budget for entry and activities separately from the hire vehicle.

Understanding the conservancy

A visit can combine wildlife with learning about conservation. Distinguish what you can see from authorised tracks from activities belonging to a particular programme. Some experiences depend on a guide, scheduled time or limited capacity. Decide your priority before paying: a game drive, a conservation visit or a stay at a particular property. That makes it easier to choose the right length of stay.

Rhinos are a major reason to visit, but sightings remain unpredictable. Keep your distance and follow staff instructions. Binoculars let you watch an animal without trying to bring the vehicle closer. During guided visits, respect rules on photographs and movement. Wild animals, conservation facilities and specifically authorised activities have different access arrangements.

Two nights to separate driving and visits

An afternoon arrival lets you settle in and confirm the next day's bookings. Use the full day for a game drive and a chosen activity, with time between them. On departure morning, prepare for the next leg rather than adding another distant booking. This pace works towards Samburu or on a highland circuit, and leaves room for a slower journey from Nairobi.

For a day visit, get clear access confirmation before leaving. Available time depends on your starting accommodation and entry time, not simply how close Ol Pejeta is to Nanyuki. Do not automatically combine Solio and Ol Pejeta in one day: visits, fees and drives are separate. One carefully planned conservation visit may offer more than several hurried stops.

Questions to ask before booking

Confirm the activity's exact name, group size, meeting point and vehicle used. Check whether guiding is included, age restrictions and access for your own rental vehicle. If anyone has mobility needs, ask separately about boarding, walking, toilets and terrain. Even a short activity can involve difficult access.

Keep written confirmation, contact details and postponement terms. Your accommodation may help make arrangements, but staying nearby does not mean every experience is included in the room price. Check the conservancy fees for your dates and the documents needed at entry. Sorting this out beforehand saves time and makes the budget clearer.

Choosing a camp and preparing to leave

Match the accommodation address to your intended gate. Ask about the last track, access hours and rooftop-tent arrivals. Self-caterers should check water, cooking areas and waste arrangements. Lodge guests should confirm meals and their timing around outings. Choose the option that suits your activities, desired independence and overall budget.

Refuel and check supplies before continuing north. Keep bookings and maps available offline. The highlands may feel cooler than the savanna, so leave warmer clothes accessible for mornings and evenings. Tell the rental team your exact stops and passenger numbers to confirm vehicle, luggage and equipment space.

Camping at Ol Lerai: separate charges

Ol Lerai is a riverside camping option within Ol Pejeta. Confirm the facilities at that particular site, how to book and which conservation fees must be added. Do not assume it has the same facilities as another conservancy campsite. Mention that you are travelling with a 4x4 and rooftop tent.

An armed ranger is mandatory when camping. The published charge checked on 9 October 2026 is KES 5,000 per ranger per night; reconfirm it for your dates and ask how many rangers your booking needs. This is separate from the pitch, entry and any vehicle charges. Include each cost when comparing camping with furnished accommodation.
