🦒 Why choose Samburu for a self-drive safari?
Samburu brings a different atmosphere to a Kenyan itinerary: dry landscapes, vegetation along the Ewaso Nyiro and northern wildlife. Species to look for include Grévy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, often grouped as the “Special Five”.
Our planning advice: allow two to three nights here. This gives you time to explore without turning each day into a long transfer. Drives remain flexible according to sightings and conditions.
🛣️ How do you reach Samburu from Nairobi?
Allow a long transfer day and leave early. Actual driving time depends on traffic, breaks, your gate and the tracks to camp. Tell your accommodation when you expect to arrive and leave enough time to reach it before dark.
Ask your camp for the exact route before departure. Fill up before the final stretch, bring water and download maps. An address described as “in Samburu” may mean the reserve, a neighbouring area or a conservancy: check its location before fixing your route.
If you wish to break the journey with an overnight stop, send us the addresses and your next destinations. We will review the complete itinerary rather than add a visit that requires driving late.
📍 Which gate and route to your camp?
Samburu County describes Archer’s Gate, near Archer’s Post, as well as West Gate and Kalama Gate. It also mentions Waso Bridge Gate for arrivals from Buffalo Springs. These names help with planning; they do not confirm the condition of a bridge or track on your visit date.
Have your accommodation confirm the gate, opening hours and any river crossing. Do not assume a Samburu ticket covers a visit to Buffalo Springs or Shaba: ask about each reserve’s fees and conditions before crossing.
Plan your stops in northern Kenya🚙 Which 4x4 should you rent for Samburu?
For a long transfer, more luggage or camping, request a Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover Defender. Confirm the configuration, seats and equipment according to your group size. Choose your vehicle for the entire route, including your stops after Samburu.
If you prefer a Suzuki Jimny for two travellers with light luggage, send us the complete route so we can check its suitability according to the tracks and season. Our Jimny is not offered for the Masai Mara if this destination is also on your itinerary.
At the briefing, check the 4x4 controls, tyres, spare wheel and assistance contacts. Keep instructions and your camp’s details accessible offline.
Compare our vehicles📅 A suggested four-day stay
- Day 1: transfer to the confirmed gate, enter and settle into your camp or lodge during daylight.
- Day 2: morning game drive, a break during the hottest hours, then a short drive in the same area.
- Day 3: a second wildlife-viewing day; a guided visit or another reserve can be considered after confirming access and fees.
- Day 4: depart for your next stop, allowing extra time for the tracks and road.
This is a suggestion; accommodation, activities and entry fees are not included. Avoid combining a long game drive with a demanding transfer.
💶 Entry fees, camping and your budget
Ask for Samburu’s current rate for your visitor category, children’s ages and travel dates. Also confirm ticket validity, vehicle fees and payment method. Do not automatically use a KWS park’s fee schedule for this reserve; amounts published on different pages are not always consistent.
Our public rooftop tent and camping kit options cost €20 per vehicle per day for two people, or €35 for four people with a Land Cruiser. A GPS with Tracks4Africa is available for €4 per day. These items are additional to vehicle rental, with availability and configuration confirmed in your quotation.
Fuel, entry fees, overnight stays and activities remain separate unless stated in your proposal. For camping, confirm the site, per-person rate and any extra services or fees before booking.
View our published fees and conditions🏕️ Where can you stay with a rooftop tent?
The county lists public campsites and special campsites within the reserve. Book an authorised site; hiring a rooftop tent does not allow you to sleep anywhere.
Ask about water, toilets, safety instructions and arrival arrangements. A lodge or camp outside the reserve may add travel and formalities: compare the location and included activities rather than only the nightly price.
🌦️ Heat, tracks and the river
Plan drives with breaks and drinking water available. On corrugated tracks, slow down and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Heat and dust require flexibility in your schedule.
After rain, check camp access and planned crossings. Do not cross flooded areas or seek an alternative crossing without local guidance. Stay on authorised tracks, give animals priority and ask about opening hours and speed limits at the gate.
Arrange walks or community visits through your accommodation or an authorised guide, with the agreement of those involved. Do not turn a riverside stop into an independent walk.
