🧭 How do you plan a self-drive safari in Tsavo West?

Choose your overnight accommodation and exploration area first, then confirm the entrance gate with your accommodation. Send Laba Africa your dates, group size, luggage and stops before and after Tsavo. We arrange the rental around your route: vehicle, any camping equipment, briefing and return.

  • Your quotation: check the model, duration, equipment and pickup and return locations.
  • Before departure: confirm access, prepare offline maps and save your camp’s and our assistance contacts.
  • At the briefing: request a demonstration of the 4x4 controls and booked equipment. Ask any questions before setting off.

💶 What should you budget for with Laba Africa?

Our published camping options cost €20 per vehicle per day for two people, or €35 for four people with a Land Cruiser, in addition to vehicle rental. GPS with Tracks4Africa is available at €4 per day. Configuration and availability are confirmed in your quotation.

A one-way return from Nairobi to Mombasa costs 300 €, or €370 to Diani, additional and by prior agreement. Fuel, park entry fees for people and vehicles, overnight stays and activities remain separate unless stated in your proposal.

These amounts relate to our rental services. Confirm the official Tsavo West entry and campsite rates and reservations for your dates: a camping price does not automatically include park entry.

🦒 Why explore Tsavo West on a self-drive safari?

Springs, volcanic terrain, savannah and dense vegetation: Tsavo West offers a safari where the landscape matters as much as wildlife encounters. At the wheel of your 4x4, you can set your own pace for stops and sightings. Be patient: animals are not always visible from the tracks, and no sighting is guaranteed.

Our advice: allow two nights here if your itinerary permits. This gives you a full day to explore without turning every drive into a race against time.

📍 Which gate should you use from Nairobi or the coast?

Kenya Wildlife Service places Mtito Andei Gate approximately 240 km from Nairobi and 250 km from Mombasa. These distances are to the gate, not your lodge: add entry formalities and the drive along tracks to your accommodation. Allow a travel day with arrival during daylight.

From Amboseli, access via Chyulu may be an option, but confirm the route and its condition before departure. Other gates serve different areas: choose with your camp, then save its contacts and route offline. Do not take a shortcut automatically suggested by your phone.

Lake Nakuru is in the Rift Valley: it is not a stop on the direct Nairobi–Tsavo route. Keep this destination for another stage of your itinerary.

🚙 Which vehicle should you rent for Tsavo West?

The Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender suit a trip with more luggage or a camping setup. For two travellers with light luggage, the Suzuki Jimny may be considered on a route approved according to the season and track conditions. Share your complete route: our Jimny is not offered for the Masai Mara, even if Tsavo is also on the itinerary.

Before setting off, use the briefing to check four-wheel-drive operation, the spare tyre and assistance contacts. Fill up before entering, bring water and download your maps. Choosing a 4x4 does not make a flooded track passable.

🧭 Que voir pendant vos sorties ?

Mzima Springs

This stop offers a chance to explore the springs and observe wildlife associated with the water. On arrival, check authorised access and instructions with staff. Leave your vehicle only in designated areas; do not approach the banks for a better photo angle.

Volcanic landscapes and viewpoints

Lava flows and volcanic terrain offer another way to discover the park. Confirm access to Shetani and the viewpoints you wish to visit. Limit your plans to one area: a short distance on the map can mean a long drive on tracks.

Wildlife viewing

Plan a morning and late-afternoon game drive, allowing enough time to return to camp. Drive slowly, watch the track edges and let animals cross. For Ngulia and any special activity, ask about that day’s access arrangements; do not promise a rhino encounter in your itinerary.

📅 A suggested three-day stop

  • Day 1: drive to the confirmed gate, enter and settle into your camp or lodge before dark.
  • Day 2: morning game drive, visit Mzima Springs if access is open, take a break, then enjoy a short drive near your accommodation.
  • Day 3: depart for Amboseli, another stop or the coast, according to your agreed route. Avoid combining a long game drive with a long transfer.

This is a suggested outline, not a package including accommodation, activities or entry fees.

🏕️ Camping or lodge: consider the location

Book before deciding on your entrance gate. A camp far from your exploration area can add many kilometres each day. For camping, confirm the authorised site, reservation, water, toilets and safety instructions. Do not camp freely within the park.

The rooftop tent and camping kit are rental options. Campsite nights, park entry and vehicle fees remain separate unless included in your quotation. Confirm accommodation rates and conditions for your dates.

🌦️ Seasons, tracks and rules

Rain can damage tracks and slow travel, even in a dry region. Ask about conditions before every long transfer. Never cross flooded areas, and respect closures.

KWS lists gate opening hours of 6 am to 6 pm and a 40 km/h park speed limit. Confirm the instructions for your stay locally. Stay on established tracks, keep your distance from animals and leave your vehicle only in authorised areas. Use designated areas for breaks and picnics.

🏖️ Continue to Mombasa or Diani

Tsavo West can fit into a safari-and-beach trip. Driving time depends on your starting point in the park, exit gate and coastal address: reserve this day for the transfer. Returning your vehicle in Mombasa or Diani must be agreed in advance and incurs separate charges.
