Beach time and boat trips
Beach walks, sandbank outings and trips in local boats depend on tides and sea conditions. Book snorkelling or diving with an equipped operator. Ask where the trip starts, its route, weather cancellation terms and inclusions. Marine wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Exploring the south coast
A guided visit to Kaya Kinondo's sacred forest or a local cultural outing can introduce the region. Shimba Hills is a separate land excursion; Kisite needs travel towards Shimoni. Plan these on different days from a long drive out of Tsavo. Check visiting rules and ask before photographing people.
Arriving with your 4x4
Your route depends on the last safari stop. Allow for traffic and the appropriate access to the south coast. Do not drive on the beach, and choose accommodation with confirmed parking. If you no longer want to drive, compare a coastal return with returning the vehicle to Nairobi.
Planning the end of your stay
Send your airport and flight time before deciding the return arrangements. A Mombasa departure and a flight from Nairobi need different endings. Confirm excursions, transfers and any one-way charges in your quotation.
Choosing a base for several nights
Keep one accommodation base for a few days after safari. It leaves room for the beach and outings without packing every morning. Check access, meals and parking if you keep the 4x4. A property with Diani in its name can be some distance from an excursion's departure point: confirm the address and transfers. The best location depends on whether you want hotel relaxation, local activities or frequent outings.
Two or three nights give you a short break; a longer stay allows beach days between excursions. Keep the day after your drive free if possible, then confirm tides, weather and the operator for the next morning. Avoid paying for every activity before you know your arrival time. Travel from Tsavo and sea conditions both reward a flexible programme.
Booking a marine activity
Ask about departure, time on the water, boat type and included transfers. For snorkelling, confirm equipment and each participant's ability. For diving, check qualifications and participation conditions with the centre. Choose based on safety, supervision and weather flexibility rather than promised dolphins or a spectacular sighting.
Bring sun protection and suitable storage for your phone. Respect instructions concerning coral, animals and movement on board. A Kisite excursion also includes a land journey, making it a different day from a local hotel-area activity. Check pickup and return times before booking dinner or a flight. Travel time belongs in the excursion plan.
Discovering the coast on land
The beach is only part of a Diani stay. Kaya Kinondo or Shimba Hills offers another perspective. Before booking, ask about access, guiding, cultural rules and physical effort. These visits are different and may not fit on the same day. Choose what interests you rather than trying to cover every nearby site.
Listen to the explanations during community or cultural visits. Ask permission for photographs and respect restricted areas. A well-organised activity clearly describes guiding and fees. Self-drivers should check the route and parking; those using an operator should check transfers. Agree the programme before paying either way.
Keeping or returning the vehicle
Your decision depends on planned outings, number of nights and departure airport. If you mainly want the beach and excursions with transport, returning the vehicle on the coast may make sense where the rental team accepts it. If exploring independently or driving back to Nairobi, keeping the 4x4 may suit you better. Compare all hire days, one-way charges, transfers and collection costs. Local delivery or return is not necessarily free.
Confirm the appointment, vehicle condition requirements and equipment packing before return. The hotel needs safe parking during your stay; the vehicle is not for beach driving. Leave airport travel and check-in time in your schedule. A calm finish comes from agreed responsibilities and timings, rather than adding one last excursion on the return morning.
