Kisite: planning a snorkelling or diving day

The Kisite marine area is visited on an organised excursion from the south coast. It complements a stay in Diani, but depends on sea conditions and requires you to distinguish the journey to the embarkation point from the boat trip itself.

Choosing the right activity

Snorkelling and scuba diving do not require the same experience. Ask about participation conditions, supervision, equipment and options for people who do not wish to enter the water. For a dive, the operator must check your qualification and the conditions suitable for you.

Check every inclusion

The booking should specify the transfer, embarkation, marine fees, any meal, equipment and return. Ask about passenger numbers and suitable lifejackets. An advertised excursion price does not always cover every charge. Also confirm postponement or refund arrangements if weather prevents departure.

Respecting wildlife and the reef

Follow the crew’s briefing, do not touch coral and do not chase animals. Dolphins or other species cannot be guaranteed. Bring sun protection, keep personal items in a waterproof pouch and leave unnecessary belongings at your accommodation.

As part of a 4x4 circuit

Schedule the excursion after a night on the coast and keep a second night for your return. Do not combine it with a long drive from Tsavo that morning. Confirm whether you drive to Shimoni or receive a transfer, then ask about parking. Marine excursions are booked separately from the vehicle.

Preparing for a full excursion day

The total time includes leaving the hotel, travelling to the embarkation point, organising the boat, the outing and the return. Ask for each element separately so you know when the activity on the water actually starts. From Diani, preferably keep one night before and one after. Arriving from Tsavo that morning risks delay and leaves no margin for tiredness. The next day can remain free for the beach, particularly with children.

Confirm whether you use your 4x4 to reach the departure or whether the transfer is included. In the first case, ask for the exact parking and meeting point; in the second, verify collection at your address and passenger numbers. Keep the operator’s contact available offline. An excursion advertised as ‘from Diani’ does not guarantee collection from every south-coast hotel.

Choosing according to participants’ abilities

Snorkelling, diving and remaining on board are different options. Explain everybody’s experience and ask what is possible for people who do not want to enter the water. Equipment must fit, and supervision should be clear before payment. For diving, the centre checks qualifications and participation conditions. Seek personal medical advice from a healthcare professional, not from a general tourism description.

Safety on board also concerns people who do not swim. Ask about lifejackets, boarding arrangements and shade. Travellers with mobility difficulties need a concrete answer about boarding and moving around. An activity described as family-friendly is not automatically accessible to everyone. Choose for the entire group without pressuring anybody into an unsuitable activity.

Weather, tides and wildlife-watching rules

The operator adapts the route to conditions and should explain what happens if departure is cancelled. Ask about postponement, refunds and any non-refundable charges. Keep the excursion in the middle of the coastal stay, not on flight day. The sea does not follow a holiday timetable: a booked outing may need to change even when it is sunny at the hotel. Crew decisions take priority over a desire to maintain the programme.

Do not touch coral, pursue animals or ignore instructions for entering the water. Dolphins or other species cannot be guaranteed. Choose a provider that presents the day for its scenery and supervision rather than promising constant proximity to wildlife. Protect personal items in a suitable pouch and leave unnecessary documents and devices at the hotel. The programme can be rewarding without reproducing every advertised photograph.

Comparing the complete cost

The amount should match the number of travellers and chosen activity. Check the transfer, marine fees, equipment, guide or instructor, meals and drinks. Ask which options remain payable locally and whether specialised equipment costs extra. Two prices can be compared only when they cover the same services. Vehicle hire and coastal nights are separate budget lines. Once these items are confirmed, you can book without leaving essential costs outside the budget.
