Lake Naivasha: boat trips, hippos and nights under the stars

Lake Naivasha gives you a change of pace between safari days. Come for the birds, a boat trip and the scenery of the Rift Valley. Two nights leave room for the lake and Hell's Gate, rather than turning Naivasha into a brief stop on the way to the Masai Mara.

What can you do around the lake?

Book a boat trip with a local operator and confirm the departure point, duration and lifejackets for every passenger. If you want to walk among grazing animals, choose a site where walking is permitted and follow its guiding arrangements. Lakeshore areas used by hippos are not places to wander freely, especially around dusk.

Hell's Gate or Mount Longonot?

Hell's Gate suits a day of volcanic scenery and cycling on open routes. Longonot is a more demanding volcano hike: start early and carry water. Avoid combining a long walk with a substantial drive on the same day. Access to the Hell's Gate gorges can be restricted by conditions, so reconfirm any activity before you go.

Fitting Naivasha into your route

From Nairobi, aim to arrive with enough daylight to reach your accommodation on the shore you have chosen. Nakuru is a natural next stop on a Rift Valley circuit. Continuing to the Mara needs a proper travel day; confirm your entry gate before planning the journey.

Camping and extra costs

Reserve an established campsite, ask about its facilities and follow its hippo safety instructions. Boat trips, bikes, guided walks and entry fees are separate from vehicle hire. Your quotation should distinguish the vehicle, camping equipment and local activities.

Choosing your shore and accommodation

Start by deciding where to stay. Accommodation around Naivasha can be spread out, and two places with the lake in their name may have very different access routes. Ask for the exact location, driving directions and parking arrangements before booking. Staying near the departure point of an early activity saves an unnecessary drive. Campers should also check toilets, water, available meals and the site's own rules.

A rooftop tent gives you flexibility over where to sleep, but you still need an authorised pitch. At a campsite visited by wildlife, food storage and movement around the grounds matter. Do not set up your table beside the water simply for the view. Hippos move between the lake and their grazing areas: follow staff instructions, including how to reach the toilets after dark.

A simple two-night stay

Arrive during the afternoon, set up camp and confirm the next day's plans. A quiet first evening gives you time to check supplies and the following drive. The next day, choose a boat trip with an authorised walk, or spend the day at Hell's Gate. A break back at your accommodation may be better than several activities in succession, particularly with children. On the final morning, pack the equipment and check your route before leaving for Nakuru or your next stop.

This gives you a full day to explore and some flexibility if the weather is unsuitable for boating. With only one night, choose a single activity and confirm its timing before setting your arrival plans. Naivasha is most enjoyable when you have time to settle in, rather than rushing between bookings and long drives.

Preparing for a boat trip

Before paying, ask whether the boat is private or shared, how many passengers it carries and what safety equipment is provided. Mention children or anyone who needs help boarding. Save a clear meeting point that you can find without an internet connection. Protect your phone and camera, and follow the boat operator's instructions about moving on board and approaching wildlife. A good sighting does not require getting too close.

Bring binoculars for birds and for watching from the shore at a safe distance. Light, wind and wildlife movements affect what you see. Choose an operator for clear arrangements and good supervision, rather than a promise of a particular photograph. Check postponement and cancellation terms too: lake trips need to respond to the day's conditions.

Preparing for the next leg

Refuel along your route and top up supplies for the safari days ahead. Confirm your next accommodation, its entry gate and expected arrival time. For the Mara, distinguish the drive to the reserve from the final journey to camp, which can take a substantial part of the day. Avoid booking a balloon flight or another fixed-time activity on your transfer day. A flexible day leaves room for breaks and a daylight arrival.
