Prepare your rental
A self-drive safari lets you build your trip around your pace. To enjoy it, start with a coherent route rather than a long list of destinations. Every change of region requires driving time, planning and a check of accommodation access.
1. Define your travel style
Note your group size, dates and priorities. Would you like lodges, camping or a mixture? Do you prefer several nights in one place or frequent moves? These answers guide the vehicle and itinerary.
If you wish to leave the driving to someone else, ask about driver-guide conditions at the start of planning.
2. Build a realistic circuit
Choose a few regions, then check their sequence against your arrival and departure. An app’s estimated driving time may not account for the final kilometres, breaks, park access or traffic.
For each stop, note the starting point, accommodation address, entrance gate where applicable and local instructions. Allow extra time and avoid making a late arrival your only option.
3. Book a suitable vehicle
Compare seats, luggage space and equipment for the proposed configuration. If camping, check sleeping capacity separately. Share your route so the rental company can confirm applicable conditions and any restrictions.
Request a written quotation with the total price, security deposit, insurance, options, handover and return. Another rental company’s conditions do not apply to your booking.
4. Arrange overnight stays and activities
Confirm reservations, accommodation access and entry rules for visited areas. Consult official operators for current rates and procedures. Accommodation near a park does not automatically include entry fees.
Keep confirmations, contacts and instructions together in one document. Download the necessary information so you can consult it offline.
5. Prepare for departure and unexpected events
Allow time for the briefing and vehicle inspection. Identify the fuel type, documents and assistance contact. Ask about the procedure for a breakdown, delay or change in access.
Before each stop, check recent information with your accommodation or local team. If conditions exceed your experience, ask for a suitable solution rather than simply continuing.
Your planning budget
Separate rental, options, overnight stays, meals, fuel and activities. You can then adjust a stop or comfort level while understanding its effect on the total.
Send your dates and initial ideas for stops. Structured preparation helps you choose the vehicle and build an enjoyable trip.
