Driving distances in Kenya: building a route by region

For a self-drive route, start with regions rather than a list of parks. Nairobi is the departure point, but the Mara, northern reserves and coast do not form a small loop. A map gives distance; your programme must include traffic, stops, gates and tracks to the lodge.

The Rift Valley and Mara

Naivasha, Nakuru and the Masai Mara can form a route west of Nairobi. Keep a transfer day for the Mara and several nights there. The camp and access gate determine the final route: do not calculate only to a central point in the reserve.

The highlands and Samburu

Stops in Nyeri, Solio, Nanyuki or Ol Pejeta naturally precede a visit to the north. Choose those that suit your interests. A short loop cannot explore every reserve at length; a transit night is not the same as a full game-drive day.

Amboseli, Tsavo and the sea

The south is arranged differently: Amboseli, Tsavo and the coast can form a progressive route. The link between the Mara and Amboseli remains substantial and should be kept as a road day. For a return to Nairobi, allow the necessary time instead of assuming a flight from the coast resolves return of the vehicle.

A margin before the flight

Keep a night near the departure airport, especially after a remote stage. Recalculate journey times for the exact accommodation and recent conditions. Share the route with the rental company to confirm the appropriate vehicle, access and any one-way arrangement.

Calculate gate to gate, then to the accommodation

For every stage, note the actual starting point, entrance gate and camp address. The journey does not end at the park name shown on the map. Add entry procedures, refuelling and final tracks. Ask the accommodation for directions and the recommended route for your vehicle. Two properties at the same destination may require very different access. Recalculate the programme after choosing the nights, not only before.

App estimates are a starting point, not a journey-time guarantee. Traffic, stops, rain and wildlife viewing slow the day. Start long transfers in the morning and aim to arrive in daylight. A fixed afternoon activity on a transfer day may become impossible even when the distance looked reasonable. Separate driving, settling in and any game drive in the timetable. Wildlife viewing on arrival is a bonus if time and rules allow, not a full day to present as guaranteed.

Choose a loop instead of crossing every region

The Rift Valley and Mara can form a coherent axis west of Nairobi. The north is arranged around the highlands and Samburu; the south around Amboseli, Tsavo and possibly the coast. Combining several axes requires more days and overnight stops on the way. For one week, choose a main region and one or two complementary stops. A vehicle provides independence but does not reduce the size of the country or the fatigue of travelling.

For a longer route, keep bases of two or three nights. Days without changing accommodation allow wildlife viewing, walking or another activity without repacking. An intermediate night may seem less dramatic but make the rest of the route more enjoyable. Do not automatically remove these nights to add another reserve. The useful question is how much time remains in each place, not how many destinations can fit in the document.

The coast or a return to Nairobi

If you finish in Diani, Mombasa or Watamu, confirm the airport and vehicle return. A one-way arrangement may involve charges and conditions and is not automatically available in every town. Compare continuous hire, transfers and any return of the 4x4. If the flight leaves Nairobi, keep a dedicated return plan. Ending the safari on the coast does not by itself end responsibility for the vehicle.

The day towards the sea is still a transfer even if you reach the hotel early enough to enjoy it. Schedule boat outings after a night there and allow for weather. Before the final flight, a night near the airport can protect against a road delay. Do not place vehicle return and a long excursion in the same time slot. The timetable should clearly show times and responsibilities before payment.

Validate the route with the rental company

Send the stages, accommodation, dates and traveller numbers to confirm the vehicle and roads compatible with the contract. Disclose border crossings and special sectors before booking. Equipment and luggage also affect driving and model choice. Keep maps and contacts offline, then ask for recent track conditions before every stage. A well-prepared route provides independence because the important decisions are made while retaining enough margin to adapt to conditions.
